The GHS Baseball team has gotten off to a 3-2 start in their 2018 campaign. Their two losses come from Sussex Hamilton in the season opener 6-5, and New Berlin Eisenhower Thursday night 5-3.

They bounced back the next day after losing to Sussex Hamilton, beating West Allis Hale 5-4 in extra innings, then won their home opener against conference opponent Cudahy 7-3, and beat New Berlin Eisenhower in blowout fashion Tuesday night 15-5, which was the first game of the two game series.

The Panthers offense has been red hot to start the season. They currently are outscoring opponents 36-22 and are out hitting opponents 39-27. They also have 12 total extra base hits as a team. Their hot offense has without a doubt been the reason for their 3-2 start.

Junior Sean Sanchez has high expectations due to the solid play by the Panthers so far.

“My expectations are to win conference after losing it last year,” Sanchez said. “Also to create bonds with each other which will lead to wins.”

The Panthers have made winning the Woodland Conference look easy in the past four years. They have won it three out of the last four years, the only year not winning it was last season.

This year, the Panthers only have four seniors on the roster, with mostly juniors along with two sophomores and two freshman.

Freshman Keegan Kapocius has had to adjust to the varsity level after playing baseball with only his grade level for years.

“Everything is faster,” Kapocius said. “Players run faster, throw faster, and are much more athletic overall. Also the strike zone is much smaller.”

One of the main reasons Greendale baseball has been so successful is the high team chemistry that each winning team possesses. Junior Ben Grenier looks forward to having fun with his teammates this season.

“The best part about baseball season is playing with my friends,” Grenier said. “It’s always a good time, win or lose, which is why I love baseball so much.”

One of the main recipes to success is team chemistry. Team chemistry often leads to wins like Sanchez said previously, and it makes the game more fun which ultimately will lead to more wins. It’s no questions that the previous baseball teams have had this type of chemistry to boost their wins and conference championships.

If they can keep up the offense and chemistry and improve on other aspects they are struggling with there is no doubt that they will compete for their fourth conference championship in the last five years and make a deep playoff run.
